The Words You Use Matter More Than You Think (Especially in Spin Class)

Most instructors think they’re motivating… but their words are doing the opposite.
Great coaching isn’t just about form.
It shapes belief.
It builds possibility.
It changes how people see themselves.
Every word you speak in a group exercise room carries energy.
It can lift someone.
It can shrink someone.
It can open a door…
or close one.
When you use empowering language, you’re doing more than cueing form.
You’re sending a message:
“I believe in you.
You belong here.
You can do this.”
And the wildest part?
Most of the time, this shift begins with something as tiny as the words we choose.
Think about the common cue:
“Don’t stop.”
It sounds motivating…
but the tone feels sharp, heavy, and limiting.
Or the phrase some instructors use casually:
“I don’t care if you…”
Even when the intention is light or playful,
the phrase lands as dismissive.
It closes space instead of expanding it.
It can make participants feel unseen.
These “no-no’s” show up everywhere without us realizing it.
But here’s the magic:
You can flip any of them into possibility with one small shift.
Instead of guarding against mistakes,
we invite people into success.
Instead of warning,
we encourage.
Instead of limiting the moment,
we expand it.
Empowering language builds confidence.
Confidence builds possibility.
Possibility builds transformation.
That is why this matters.
That is why this shift changes rooms.
That is why participants return to your classes feeling taller, lighter, and more themselves.
