I watched this Ted Talk recently and thought about learning how to teach spin classes relates, especially as we age!
She talks about how learning becomes difficult as we age but there are so key things we can do to help ourselves optimize our learning.
6 things:
Be attentive (no distractions)
Be alert (ie exercise right before you set out to learn something as this increases your alertness)
Sleep well so that you can get what you learned from your short term memory to your long term memory
Take breaks (spacing the learning out over time helps retention of knowledge compared to doing a bunch of hours in one day)
Repeat (this signals to the brain that what you’re learning is important)
Make mistakes (learning around an emotional stimulus helps you retain the info better)
Anyway, I think we all have done these things along this spin journey so this serves as validation of the experience! And also insight into how to optimize learning of anything as we age. (Yay Us!)
